As indicated, variable voltage is very useful. Unless you are going to try and run 35K+ motors, a 1.5-2 amp supply for each lane will be adequate for a routed home track use. There are lots of inexpensive (under $40) power supplies available on various auction sites. Our homemade 1/32 scale routed slot car track with two Scalextric Ferrari F430's. Curves are tight due to space limitations, and we're just learning here but were eventually able to make fast laps.
